Are you and your student nervous about move-in and living on campus? Fear not, all of your worries and concerns will be addressed here.  We are so excited to see everyone on campus this year!

Moving into a residence hall may seem overwhelming, but this should make things a little easier. By now, your student should have received an email from Housing asking that they select an arrival time.  Make sure that you choose a slot that gives you and your student enough time to arrive on campus. If you need to reschedule your time slot, log back into the housing portal at housing.uark.edu to change your time.

Each family will have a 30-minute time slot. I know that may sound like a small window of time to move into a residence hall, but trust me, it’s doable.  The time slot only accounts for the time that you and your student are allowed to park near the residence hall and get their belongings inside. Dollies and carts should be available to you at the front desk of the residence hall. Once all of your belongings are inside, you will have to move your vehicle to Lot 56, near the Bud Walton Arena and Martin Luther King Blvd. Our wonderful transit service will bring you back to the residence hall so you can officially unpack and decorate your student’s room or simply explore our beautiful campus!

Parents, remind your students that when packing for move-in, remember that residence hall rooms may be different from what they are used to at home. Space in a room is limited when you have to share it with someone—even if you are living in a single room. Focus on what you NEED for college, try not to pack your whole bedroom and be considerate of everyone’s space. Here is a great packing list that you can build off of as you start packing up:

Nervous about who your student is moving in with or how well they’ll get along? Don’t worry, your student will have a meeting with the Resident Assistant where they’ll complete a housing contract. The housing contract addresses everything from guests, how often they would like to clean, what time they go to bed, and what personal belongings they are willing to make accessible to everyone else. Any other concerns that your student has can be discussed and added to the contract as well. This helps everyone get a clear understanding on how to respect their roommate(s) and live comfortably all year!

Once your student is all moved in, encourage them to grab a friend or roommate and check out the Welcome Week events planned. The schedule of events can be found at welcomeweeks.uark.edu. Also, encourage your student to get to know their Resident Assistants! Throughout the year, they will be hosting events at the residence hall which gives your student a chance to get to know them better and meet other students living in the same community as them. The time for move-in is approaching and we are so excited for you to be here! See you soon!
