When your student moves into their dorm, they might think they need to bring every item of clothing from their closet and every little knick-knack from their room with them. I thought I needed all of my clothes, so I brought them all with me. In reality, I wore the same outfits over and over again, and I barely wore any of the clothes I thought I would need. If your student keeps all of these things in their room until their move-out day, then they will have a very hard time moving out on time. I would recommend for your student to bring and take things in shifts as they need them.
In August, when your student moves in, I would recommend for them to bring their summer outfits because it is very hot in August and the beginning of September. I would also say that they need to bring their fall stuff and a few jackets because in mid-September to the end, it can get a little chilly. Fall weather goes back and forth between hot and chilly, so your student will have to be prepared for both. If your students get a chance, I would recommend taking most of their summer stuff home toward the end of October. By that time, scorching temperatures aren’t usually an issue, but this is Arkansas and the weather can be unpredictable, so your student may want to have a few summer things left here at school. By the end of October and beginning of November, your student will want to have their winter clothing here because weather does start to get cold.
When your student leaves in December for Winter Break, I would advise them to bring home any clothes that will not be used during the winter months and to bring back any winter clothing they have at home when they come back, if they haven’t already. The next few months of school after Winter Break can be brutally cold and windy, so they need to come back prepared. I would say that some essentials are hats, gloves, scarves, coats, and maybe a pair of boots for the snow. If your student enjoys playing outside in the snow, then they may want to bring a sled or two back because the campus turns into a big playground for students when we have a snow day! Just remind them that they need to be careful because there isn’t anyone here to tell them that they shouldn’t do something that may be dangerous!
The cold weather lasts through February and sometimes even until Spring Break. I would say that after Spring Break, it is safe to take most of the winter clothing home. They may want to leave a little bit of the winter stuff here just in case we get a random cold weather outbreak, but for the most part it is safe to begin to bring spring stuff back to school with them! Spring is beautiful here in Fayetteville. It gets warm enough to wear shorts and short sleeves comfortably, but it can also be cool enough to want a jacket and pants on. It’s all on what your student prefers to wear during the spring!
Toward the end of the school year, the end of April and early May, it gets pretty warm. Your student may just keep their spring stuff up here and have a little summer stuff thrown in with it. They won’t need to bring too much stuff back after Spring Break just because there isn’t much time left on campus once Spring Break is over. If they have a chance, they may want to start taking decorations and bigger things that they don’t need home just to save some trouble when they start to move out after finals!
I didn’t do any of these things that I mentioned above. I wish I had. When I began to move out, I realized just how much stuff I didn’t need in my dorm room, and I should’ve taken it home before that day. It would’ve saved me a lot of trouble at the end of the year.
