Most incoming students are looking for a fun way to get to know other students and get to know a little about the university around them. What better way to do that than to attend an event specially designed for new student? Look no further! New Student Welcome is a program put on by New Student and Family Programs annually to officially welcome all new students. This will be the first event in the lineup of A-week events. This year New Student Welcome will be held August 19th at 5:30 p.m., after a majority of students have moved into their residence halls, in the Union Mall, the outdoor space in front of the Arkansas Union. In order to ensure that the students are able to find their way to the event, some of the Resident Assistants in every hall lead their residents there. This also allows students to meet the other people that are in their residence hall. At the time of the event it is the only dining option open on campus so encourage your student to take advantage of the food served at this event. New Student Welcome is a great place to go and meet new people, create a bond with their new roommate, or reconnect with hometown friend who are also attending the University of Arkansas. One memory I have from my New Student Welcome is running into an old friend that I had not seen since freshman year of high school. This led to the exchanging of numbers and meeting up for lunch throughout the rest of my freshman year.

While making friends is exciting nothing gets a college student somewhere faster than the mention of FREE FOOD. New Student Welcome is one of the first places to get free food on campus. There are hamburgers, chips, and cookies! New Student and Family Programs provides an entire meal and it does not require a swipe from your student’s meal plan. All the food is catered by Chartwells, the company that serves a majority of food in the dining halls, Union food court, and other restaurants on campus. It is a fantastic meal to start off a great week of Welcome Events.

The food that is served at New Student Welcome is great, but it is not the only thing that your student has to look forward to. The band attends and teaches some of the chants and cheers getting new students ready for the Freshman Pep Rally later on in the week. Accompanying the band are some of the University of Arkansas cheerleaders and mascots. This helps pump up students who have had a long day of settling in and get them in the mood to move around and meet other students. On top of all of the other things that take place at New Student Welcome, the students are welcomed and encouraged by the Chancellor of the University, Joe E. Steinmetz. New Student Welcome is a great place to make friends, get a free meal, and get excited about this new life chapter.
