Is your Razorback interested in running for executive positions in our Registered Student Organizations or looking to get involved in general, but feels that they lack the set of leadership skills to do so? Well Emerging Leaders is a program made just for them! Emerging Leaders is a six-week leadership development program that is open to all first- and second-year students who are seeking to build the confidence to be the leader they are meant to be. This is done by assisting the students in four primary areas: interpersonal skills, intrapersonal communication, inclusion and diversity, and professionalism. Each Emerging Leaders session will be led by someone within the department of New Student and Family Programs as well as a group of undergraduate mentors eager to help your student along the way. Within a time span of six to eight weeks, your student is able to meet new people, explore new ideas, and be introduced to leadership opportunities on campus.

As a former participant of Emerging Leaders, I can 100% agree that the program helped me build the confidence I needed to be an efficient leader. The program taught me a lot about myself as well as others. We spent much of our time learning about the diversity of the students within our group because, as a leader, it is important to be open-minded about perspectives and experiences that may be different than your own. We were able to build a judgement-free environment and learn about certain privileges students acquired and more. It was truly an amazing learning experience! While in the program, we were also able to learn a lot about ourselves. By taking different assessments, such as Strengths Quest, we were able to receive insight on who we were as leaders. The program also gave us tips and tricks on professionalism. This segment of the program has helped prepare me for future interviews and professional events.

Joining Emerging Leaders is not only something that can boost your student’s resume, but it is also a great opportunity for incoming freshman and sophomores who want to potentially have leadership roles on campus! Since the program, I’ve been introduced to so many opportunities. I was able to become a Resident Assistant for the Maple Hill East Residence Hall and a Parent and Family Ambassador. Because of the Emerging Leaders program, I was equipped with the tools I needed to be an effective leader within these positions. The best part about Emerging Leaders is that it only takes up a small portion of your student’s time, so even if they have a busy schedule, this program will surely fit.

Emerging Leaders is a great way to gain the leadership skills needed for roles in any organization on campus, as well as in future careers. So Razorback families, be sure to have your student apply for such an amazing opportunity! Applications will open in August and sessions will begin in September. It is definitely something that they do not want to miss out on!
