When I decided to come to Fayetteville I was thinking about how big the campus is, the fun trips to the Farmer’s Market, and the new friends I would make once I got there. One thing I did not prepare for was the weather. Coming from Houston, I was used to the hot, humid climate and did not even own a sweatshirt… until I moved up to Fayetteville.
Like I mentioned before, being from Houston I did not have much experience with snow, or the cold weather in general. The first time it got slightly under 80 degrees I ran to the bookstore and bought a sweatshirt. To fight the cold I would suggest layering as much as possible. Walking across campus all bundled up is great, but when your student sits down in a heated classroom they’ll wish they didn’t have on a giant fluffy sweater. The most important article of clothing that saved my life during the winter was a pair of snow boots. Really, any type of rubber boots with a good grip on the bottom will keep your student from sliding down the many hills on campus.
The rain is what I didn’t expect to come as often as it did. I felt like the first 2 weeks of school were full of on and off rain showers. To keep myself from getting completely drenched every time I stepped outside I made sure to take my raincoat with me everywhere I went. If I were to forget my raincoat (which happened often) it was okay because I also kept a small rain poncho in my backpack for emergencies.
The last thing I did not prepare myself for was how beautiful the campus is when the leaves start to change. That being said, when the leaves change color, they change color fast. I did not expect to go to bed one night surrounded by green, and wake up the next morning to beautiful, vibrant reds, yellows, and oranges. This is definitely the time of year to slow down, and appreciate the beauty of Fayetteville.
