Choosing a major is a big decision as an incoming student in college. This decision is ultimately a reflection of what your student is interested in as a career field and what they would like to do for their future. At times, this can be very overwhelming for a student coming into college. A lot of the time students feel pressure that this decision will shape every aspect of their lives moving forward. Although picking your major is a big decision, that doesn’t mean that is the end all be all. First year students should not be too stressed about declaring a major right away.
Statistics state that about two-thirds of first year college students are unsure about their major when arriving on campus. However, for the lucky one-third of first year students, they already know exactly what they want to major in and pursue for their future careers. Whether your student is unsure of their major or knows what they are interested in studying, they have plenty of time to figure it out. Many students who are unsure decide to begin their college major as undecided. This allows students to take the basic university required courses their first few semesters at the University of Arkansas. By going in as undecided, first year students have the ability to explore every area of study before declaring which they would like to major in.
There are many helpful tips you as a parent can give your student to help them decide on a major. Advise your student to reflect on what their interests are as well as what their potential dreams are for their future and see which major fits best with those interests and dreams. A great way to understand each major that is offered at the University of Arkansas is visiting the different schools and speaking to advisers. The University of Arkansas offers more than 200 degree programs within 10 different schools of study. Whether your student is considering a major in business, engineering, education, nursing, architecture, or many others, the University of Arkansas has resources for them to discover what they love to do that will guide them to success.
