College is expensive and the schools know that. They are willing to help you in every way they can to ensure that your student is able to take the classes they need to graduate. Your student can earn scholarships and get other financial aid that can help you. The best thing you can do to help your student is prepare them for the financial side of college is set up a budget. Most students, and young adults, neglect the importance of establishing a budget, and this is the most crucial time for them to break that habit. They had a lot of things paid for when they were at home, and that is not necessarily the case when they are away from home. As parents, you guys can still help them, but slowly start to give them less money and encourage your student to get a job or create better spending habits for themselves to teach them all the responsibility of money and what it means. Students will have meal plans, but you will be surprised as to how much your student will eat out. Encourage them to buy a few groceries and eat in their dorm if they do not want to eat in the dining halls. This will save a lot of money in comparison to eating out. Encourage your student to get a credit card for emergencies only. They can pay for gas and small things to build up their credit, but do not let them rely on it because they could overspend and not be able to pay it back. This will teach them the importance of paying bills on time too. The biggest thing to encourage them is to graduate on time! This cannot always be done because of certain majors or your student switching majors, but do your best to get them started off right so that they will graduate in four years.
