Nursing is a great route for students who want to go into the medical field but maybe not spend 4+ years in medical school. Your student can get a degree in nursing during their 4 years in undergrad and graduate and become a registered nurse (RN). Nursing is a fulfilling career and nurses are always in demand, so there are a lot of promising jobs after graduation. If your student is considering a degree in nursing this is the article for you!
Here at the University of Arkansas we have the Eleanor Mann school of Nursing. It is the largest nursing school in the SEC! Nursing school is very competitive here at the University of Arkansas. They accept about 100 students a semester. Normally students take 2 years of pre-nursing classes including general education classes and 5 sciences (biology, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, and microbiology). Once they have completed all prerequisites and have been accepted into the nursing school it is an additional 2 years long and students can graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and become a registered nurse after passing NCLEX- a nation-wide licensing exam that gives nurses permission to practice.
Nursing school involves a variety of lecture courses, clinical experience, and simulation labs. The lectures are like other undergraduate courses, but are usually smaller and more personal. Clinicals involve rotations at different hospitals with real patient experiences. Simulation lab involves mannequins that simulate real situations like labor and delivery, post op surgery, practice for inserting IVs, and many more! This variety of teaching helps provide students with a multitude of disciplines to learn. The clinical and simulation lab experience are key to learning and practicing real world nursing skills. In addition to this, nursing school includes integrated testing to prepare students for the NCLEX, which our students are known to have good percentage passing rates on.
If your student decides nursing is the right degree for them I hope they consider Eleanor Mann School of Nursing the place for them. It is a place they will spend countless hours studying and make many memories. Personally, I have loved my time here in nursing school at the U of A. Nursing is a wonderful and fulfilling major and career where you learn so much about people and the medical field. Here at the U of A teachers and clinical instructors really care about students and leading them to succeed.
