When students first visit the University of Arkansas, they may be advised to be familiar with their professors. Being familiar with professors helps them to match faces with names and helps students learn how to better succeed in that professors class(es).

After freshman year, students may have the same professor for different classes in a department. Professors typically have office hours on the syllabus for a class, some requiring students to schedule an appointment in advance. A few, however, have an open-door policy. Your Razorback can either schedule an appointment through UASuccess on Blackboard or simply walk into the professor’s office during office hours. This will open the door to many more opportunities, and your Razorback’s professors will be more likely to recognize him or her in future classes.

It’s a good idea for students to introduce themselves to a professor before the semester starts rolling. In a small class, a professor may get to know his or her students better during class hours. Some of the University of Arkansas’s classes can have as many as 400 or 500 students, though. Those professors may have difficulty remembering students even if they’ve met once before. It’s wise to see a professor several times during the semester.

Your Razorback should ask questions about note-taking, studying, and ways of contacting a professor in these office meetings. Different professors will have different tips for doing well in their classes, and some professors may have a certain way that they prefer to be contacted. Even if they mention a topic in class, they may elaborate more on it in a more personal setting. Above all, students shouldn’t be afraid to politely ask for advice or ask questions about their grades. Professors are human too!
