When preparing for your student to leave for college, it is a transition for both you and your student.  This transition can be hard in the beginning since as parents you are used to being around your student more than just holidays and occasionally on weekends.  In order to make this transition smooth for yourself and your student, it is important to have patience during this time.  Your student is beginning to find out who they truly are through different programs, registered student organizations, and even from peer groups. One helpful tip I believe that will help you transition is to create a call schedule.  Your student may not be able to call or text as often as they would like due to academics, social life, or even work.  So in order to keep communication with your student so that it won’t become a conflict is to create this schedule.  Most students will call in between breaks for class or even at night before they begin to study.  As a parent, it is important to let your student explore different options academically because they might decide to change their major and that is normal.  There are several different resources on campus that can help your student with this decision.

Communication is the major key for success with building relationship with your students.  Having open communication and making sure that both parties are understanding of the transition that has taken place is the goal.  Your student wants to communicate with you just as much as you would like to communicate with them.  As becoming young adults your student will begin to discover different habits and opportunities on campus that they once didn’t know they would enjoy from high school.  Letting your student make more decision while still being there to support them will help them in their transitions.
