Everyone knows one of the scariest things about college is roommates. When I came into college, my biggest concern was living with a stranger I knew nothing about. Because of movies, tv shows and other crazy things in the media, I went in expecting the worst (which was the wrong thing to do). I was at ease when my roommate and I completed the roommate agreement sheet that is done in every residence hall, and especially once I found out our RA keeps up with those agreements for the residents on their specific floor. If there are any problems with your student and their roommate, they can go to the RA, review the agreement and if further actions need to be taken, each RA will do so. Dozens of students each year are matched with random roommates, most of those people become best friends and continue to be friends throughout their college experience. As parents, you have to just remind your student that the key to enjoying college in a nutshell is to be open minded. College introduces us to different types of people, the best thing to do is to be open to doing things different ways and meeting people who are different than what we are used to. It not only makes your college experience more enjoyable, but it gives us a more positive outlook on things, preparing us for the real world. The important thing for you to do as a parent is to BE POSITIVE, try to find light in the negative situations, if there are any and remind your student of the roommate agreement contract. If any of those agreements are being broken, refer them to their RA.
